We’re committed to advancing circularity by prioritising post-consumer recycled content in our packaging - helping customers meet regulatory requirements and achieve EPR goals.
While PET bottles are now frequently recycled, billions of trays are still wasted every year. kp Tray2Tray® fixes this by creating a closed loop for food packaging trays working with suppliers to create a separate supply stream of recycled PET pots, tubs, and trays, that can be used to create more of the same. This initiative ensures PET trays and rigid films come back time again as fully recyclable food packaging, removing the need for virgin material to enter the supply chain.
It is estimated* that one million tonnes of PET trays are produced in the EU27+3 per annum. 25% is collected and sorted for recycling and only 5% is turned back into PET food trays.
750k tonnes of tray PET is wasted every year! Our kp Tray2Tray® initiative creates a closed loop for food trays. We work with our partners to recover used food trays and turn them into new food packaging trays.
On its own, kp Tray2Tray® has the potential to bring more than 50,000 tonnes of rPET back into use.

Frequently asked questions
What has kp FP achieved so far with kp Tray2Tray®?
When we began in 2020, 3% of our recycled material was from kp Tray2Tray®. In 2024, it increased to 12.5% translating to more than one billion post-consumer trays recovered and used. translating to more than 900 million post-consumer trays recovered and used. We have increased our share of kp Tray2Tray® in a challenging market thanks to strong supplier partnerships.
How will my product look on the shelf? Will it be less transparent than virgin material?
There is a colour variation compared to virgin material, but it isn’t noticeable on shelf. When the trays are stacked, it is more noticeable. This variation is a selling point that could be marketed to end consumers. It demonstrates that the pack contains recycled material in the same way as organisations certified or licenced by the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) can leverage the power of the globally recognized logo.
Does kp Tray2Tray® affect the performance of the finished product?
kp Tray2Tray® flake performs like any other recycled PET and can be sorted and recycled back into more food grade packaging with no compromise on functionality or safety.
How can I be sure I’m really getting kp Tray2Tray® recyclate?
Our supply chain is certified by RecyClass and ensures the safety, quality and traceability of our trays and rigid films that are made with recycled PET. If you need certificates for your project, please request a sales call above.
Do products made with kp Tray2Tray® cost more?
